Bare Wood Furniture Vs. Finished: Which One Is Cheaper, Better Quality, More Long-Lasting, And Fully Exclusive.
I have a biased opinion when it relates to answering the question that's the title of this article, and I know it. At the best, I can only hope to adequately justify my position that bare wood furniture is, dollar for dollar, the far higher value, but let's take a look at some of the reasons why and see if I can't convince you.
Firstly, bare wood furniture is built out of ...well, wood. Not pressboard, not particle board, not sawdust and Elmer's attempting to pass itself off as wood, but real, honest to goodness wood! Next time you're at your local chain shop, ask them to show you all their "solid wood" furniture and really look it over. Most of the time, I'm betting you'll find pressboard someplace.
Next, bare wood furniture costs lower. Sometimes a lot less. Yes, you have to "do something" to it (and we will get to that in a moment), but that's more of an opportunity gained than lost. Economic times being what they are, most everybody is trying to save money where they can, and this looks like a great tradeoff to me.
Third, bare wood furniture allows you to put your creative stamp on it as you finish the piece, instead of getting something "just like every third house in the country." Express yourself! Be unique! Create something that's pure "you."
Fourth, bare wood furniture is more long-lasting. That's as, ultimately, all that pressboard really isn't very strong. All wood furniture is as rugged and durable as it is appealing.
Fifth, bare wood furniture looks better with time. With proper care at its finishing, you can create an heirloom piece which will probably serve for decades. Most store purchased furniture just becomes "used furniture" after 3-5 years. Great difference.
I fell in love with bare wood furniture
with my first piece (a 6' tall, oak, double bookcase). As we gradually replace the furniture in our house, as much as possible, we're going with bare wood furniture. It's inexpensive, higher quality, more long-lasting, and totally unique.
